Malvern at the sharp end in first test - 11th March 2010

The first official test of the year took place at Oulton Park on Wednesday, a full complement of teams and drivers were present to get on terms with their respective progress on the new Dunlop tyres. Three one hour sessions concluded with new runners Cliff Dempsey Racing back at the top off the time sheets once more with Scott Malvern setting the fastest time of the first session aboard his new Ray GRS10, this was an impressive performance for a car just 'out of the box', as the day progressed it was Australian Scott Pye who set the ultimate fastest time with Malvern setting the second fastest lap in the final session of the day almost half a second faster than the current lap record! Scott commented, "I'm very pleased with this first day of running, Gavin (Ray) has done a great job building the car and Cliff has really hit a great setup straight away, obviously there is room to improve but for sure we can now get our heads down and work on developing the car in time for the first race."

More charity racing for Scott - 15th January 2010

The first ever Celebrity Karting Challenge hosted in the Autosport International Live Action Arena within the NEC Birmingham, on Friday 15 January, saw the world's motorsport elite join together to raise an astonishing sum of £59,500, taking the total raised by David Brabham's Racing4Charity organisation in the last three years to over £151,000.

With the driver entry list, forming 26 teams, reading like a who's who across the motorsport spectrum, the 2010 Celebrity Karting Challenge gave 50 public drivers the chance to race with established and rising stars.

This year's kart race aimed to raise awareness and funds for Malaria No More UK, the charity supported by Brabham in his role as Special Ambassador, to help end malaria - a preventable disease which kills over one million people every year, the majority being children in Africa. Other charities benefitting from the event include Headway, in memory of Henry Surtees, Harley Slack, Emmaus, Bliss, Nara, and the Richard Burns Foundation.

The amazing celebrity line-up included racing legend Derek Bell as Race Director, Allan McNish, Anthony Davidson, Emanuele Pirro, Andy Priaulx, Marino Franchitti, Alex Wurz, Franck Montagny, Nicolas Minassian, Matt Neal and Robbie Head, to name a few. The full team listing is available at www.racing4charity.com

In the opening laps The Loose Cannons stormed into the lead from a lowly sixteenth position on the grid with Duncan Tappy at the wheel while ALMS frontrunner Lord Drayston's team, Drayston Racing, which had newly crowned Formula Ford 1600 champion Scott Malvern in the hot seat for the start were lying a very comfortable second.

This was all short lived though, a recipe for chaos: 26 racing drivers in go-karts on a 27s lap! The inevitable happened and the circuit barriers took the punishment. The circuit was constructed in record time using plastic barriers, however due to time restrictions these were not filled with water or sand and so not fixed in place. Red flag after red flag for circuit repairs meant that the race order changed at a remarkable pace.

Finally it was The Loose Cannons who took race victory with public drivers Dave Fry and Shaun Traynor from Winchester taking the top step of the podium alongside Riki Christodoulou, Paul Rees and Will Stevens. Teammate Duncan Tappy commented: "We returned to the Celebrity Karting Challenge as defending champions, so we are delighted to retain the title. We'll definitely be back in 2011, as there really isn't another event quite like this with such an impressive driver entry list. This year's was the best yet."

Team Harley Slack Racing (1), featuring Salvo Cachia, Adam Christodoulou, Ben Collins, Amanda Stretton, Stewart Hutchinson and Johnny Spencer, came second. The Mad Ferrets finished third, with Nigel Moore, Alex Mortimer, Gordon Shedden, Tim Sugden, Rene Robertson and John Taylor completing the 2010 podium.

Brabham, co-founder of Racing4Charity with Bill Williams, said: "I'm very happy with how this whole event has come together and to have achieved our ultimate goal of raising awareness for Malaria No More UK. I'd like to thank everyone for their amazing support, particularly the public drivers who donated to race alongside a fantastic line-up of celebrities, helping to make our first appearance in the Live Action Arena a success. I am honored to have been joined by such an amazing group of the sport's best drivers, all giving up their free time to support Racing4Charity and my special thanks go to each and every one."

Malvern steps up to British Series - 15th December 2009

National Formula Ford Champion Scott Malvern is to step up to the Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain in 2010. The 20-year-old will lead the Cliff Dempsey Racing team back to the championship, and will race a Ray GRS10 chassis.

Malvern explained his reasons for remaining with Dempsey after receiving much interest from many of the established teams in the series: "I have been very happy with Cliff in 2009 and the way he went about his business. Right from the start we talked about this being a two-year programme and if we could crack FF1600 in year one we would move up to Duratec together for year two. Things couldn't have gone much better for my debut season in cars thanks to Cliff, Francie and the team".

Cliff Dempsey Racing has not contested the Ford-backed series since 2006, when Cliff's son, Peter, won four races and claimed third in the championship. "We did consider running other cars, including the Mygale, but I have a long and successful association with Ray and we strongly believe it can do a good job," said Cliff Dempsey. "Scott impressed me a great deal this year not only with his talent but his maturity and the calm no-nonsense way he just got on with the job. I know that other top teams have been keen to sign him so I'm delighted that he's decided to remain with us."

UK Championship Decided - 13th November 2009

After 6 hours of evidence from video footage, various witnesses and the clerks present at the meeting, the judges on the Motorsport Ireland Court of appeal panel deemed that the incident between Scott Malvern and Rory Butcher in the championship decider was an act of dangerous and careless driving on the part of Mr Butcher, this finding means that Rory is excluded from race two making Scott the newly crowned Webcon UK National Formula Ford 1600 Champion, an amazing achievement for any rookie driver competing in such a competitive championship, Scott said afterwards, "Its been a great result for myself and the team for sure, I just hope that this doesn't overshadow what a tremendous first season this has been for me, a big thank you to everyone that has helped me towards this result and a special mention must go to Tom O'Neill for helping me through this process." This result just adds to what has been an already impressive tally this year; take a look at Scott's Motorsport CV under the Biography section of this site.

Malvern takes first Championship - 28th September 2009

Over the weekend the last two round of the Formula Ford Midland South Championship took place, Scott did not take part in these two races but such was his championship lead it would need his nearest rival, Adam Quartermaine to win both races to overcome the points gap, upon not finishing race one the championship was out of Quartermaine's reach handing the Midland South Championship to Scott having only contested half of the ten rounds! Scott now heads into the next few weeks preparing for the end of season trophy race, The Formula Ford Festival.

National title will go to court of appeal - 14th September 2009

The stage was once again set for a title showdown, Scott once again put in a perfect performance in race one taking the win and setting a new lap record, breaking the old record by half a second! This closed the championship points gap down to just two points meaning whoever wins the race wins the championship! History repeated itself in race two with Scott taking the lead of the race at turn one only for Scott's championship rival Rory Butcher to make a desperate attemt to stop Scott driving home to another victory and the championship by jumping across the grass on the inside of the turn and slamming into the side of Scott's car, this dangerous manuover sent Scott's car flying up into the air causing him to drop back to 5th, after fighting back up to 2nd in two laps the damage caused by the impact with Butchers car caused him to retire, while Butcher went on to win the race.

Shortly after the race butcher was excluded from the results given the video fotage seen of the incident making Malvern champion, however Butcher appealed against the decision and had it overtuned, not happy with the way the stewards delt with the matter Scott then counter appealed the stewards decision to overturn the result. The date for the hearing is yet to be set.

Controversy at Brands - 17th August 2009

With a TV crew and the majority of Scott's sponsors present, it looked as if it would turn be a dream day for the Essex driver taking pole position, fastest lap and a comfortable victory in race one ahead of championship rival Rory Butcher, however all is not so clear cut in Formula Ford racing. In the closing stages of race two, Butcher made a wild lunge at the back of the championship leaders car causing him to spin only to rejoin in 4th position.

This controversial move on the penultimate lap of the race saw Butcher finish on the podium while Scott would have to setle for 4th at the flag. Naturaly the observers at Graham Hill Bend fed a statement of fail play to the clerk of the meeting and after hearing both drivers version of events the cleark decided that two points and a repremand was sufficient punishment for Rory's actions. However the clerk later realised that the incident affected the championship in terms of points but it was too late to amend the result.

This al means that the championship will go down to the last race of the year at Mondello park but it will be now in Rory's favour by 11 points.

Dual Championship Leader! - 29th June 2009

After a weekend of tough racing at Silverstone in first the sweltering heat and then difficalt wet conditions, taking another win and a second, Scott has not only doubled his National championship lead, taking it from 13 to 26 points (see championship standings) but has also emerged as Midland south championship leader taking over charge of the lead from Ian Gough by 8 points even having missed one round! The new Midland South top six now looks like this after 4 of 10 rounds to be completed:

Scott Malvern         57

Ian Gough               49

Matt Shawyer         33

David Grady           29

Malvern Featured In Motorsport News - 6th May 2009

Scott was today featured in Motorsport News, the half page article outlines Scott's transition from Mechanic to race winning and championship leading driver, Scott explains "On Saturday afternoon, Rob Ladbrook from Motorsport News came over and asked if we could sit down for a chat, he asked me about working at Jamun, my karting and how hard it has been to make the transition from Mechanic to Driver. I'm very greatful to Rob for coming over and spending the time to find out just how much effort it takes for someone like me to go racing."
